Daily Maintenance Checklist: Keep Your Terminal Tractor Operating in Peak Shape You can’t afford to have one of your terminal tractors go down. Our Fleet Manager Doug Stough offers some daily maintenance tips to keep your terminal tractors running at peak efficiency. These are just a few simple ways to extend the “uptime” of your terminal tractors. Contact Doug if you have any questions. It’s important to inspect your terminal tractor daily. Beware: Tank with ‘Blue Cap’ is NOT for Diesel Fuel On your terminal tractor, you will find two tanks – one is obviously for your diesel fuel but it’s the second tank, the one with the Blue Cap, that sometimes confuses users. It’s very important that you know the difference. The Blue Cap tank is there for a reason. It indicates that this tank is exclusively for Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF), a non-hazardous solution, which is 32.5 percent urea and 67.5 percent de-ionized water. It is sprayed into the exhaust stream of diesel vehicles to break down dangerous NOx emissions into harmless nitrogen and water. The system is called a Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR). DEF is not a fuel additive and should never come into contact with diesel. Unfortunately, there have been instances when diesel was mistakenly pumped into the DEF tank. But even small amounts of diesel can damage your SCR system. Conversely, if DEF is filled into the diesel tank, the engine will stop running almost immediately, and the vehicle will need to be taken to a service center for repair. Prevention is the best course. But...if either of these scenarios happen, contact our Turbo service team immediately. Our booth at the NACV show.
